What is the difference between COB display and LED display?

The difference between COB display and LED display mainly lies in the packaging technology of the product. First, the difference in packaging technology

The COB display uses Chip on Board technology, which directly integrates and packages the LED light-emitting chip on the PCB substrate, and is covered and protected by special polymer materials. There is no bracket and lens structure of conventional LED display packaging, and the packaging process is more streamlined.

The LED display uses SMD packaging. The LED light-emitting chip is usually packaged in a small device with pins or solder balls. These devices are installed on the PCB substrate through surface mounting technology. Each device is an independent light-emitting pixel.

Second, the display effect is different.

COB display screens can achieve smaller pixel pitches because of the high integration of light-emitting chips. For example, they can easily achieve small pitch and micro pitch (below 1.0mm) packaging, with more delicate pictures, better color saturation and display uniformity. It is not only suitable for close-up viewing, but also can effectively suppress the generation of moiré.

The SMD package used by LED display screens can also provide high-quality display effects, but it is difficult to achieve packaging under micro-pitch conditions due to technical limitations. Therefore, it may not be as delicate as COB under some extremely small pitch conditions, and the light-emitting form of point light sources may cause a slight granular phenomenon.

Third, durability and protection.

The packaging method of COB display screens is to directly package the LED light-emitting chip on the PCB board, which will have stronger protection against the external environment, and it is not easy to drop the light in terms of shock resistance, fall resistance, and bump resistance, so the required maintenance rate is lower.

The LED display screen uses SMD packaging. Although it will also have a certain degree of durability, its independent lamp bead structure is more easily damaged in harsh environments or when there is strong vibration, and the anti-bump ability is almost non-existent.

Fourth, the difference in maintenance level

Because COB display screen adopts integrated packaging, it may be necessary to replace the entire module during maintenance, and then the module is returned to the factory for repair. The maintenance cost may be high, but in daily use, its failure rate is lower.

LED display screen adopts SMD packaging. If the lamp bead problem is caused by moisture, bump or electrical failure, the single lamp bead can be repaired and replaced. The maintenance is relatively simple, but the probability of lamp falling may be higher after long-term use.

Fifth, manufacturing cost

COB display screen production may have a relatively high investment in the early stage. What factors will affect the price of COB display screen, because the requirements for packaging process and production equipment will be relatively high, but the long-term maintenance cost will be relatively low.

The initial cost of LED display screen production is relatively low, and the production process and production process are currently relatively mature, but it is necessary to consider the maintenance of long-term use and possible frequent repairs, so the total cost needs to be comprehensively considered.

Therefore, COB display screens have obvious advantages in display fineness, product protection, and durability. The products are suitable for use in situations where there are extreme requirements for display quality and the usage scenarios are complex. Traditional LED display screens have more advantages in cost control and maintenance convenience, and can adapt to a wide range of application needs.
