Characteristics of high-power COB LED light sources

High-power Chip-On-Board (COB) lights represent the forefront of lighting technology, boasting exceptional power density and efficiency. They effortlessly scale from tens to hundreds of watts, delivering over 10,000 lumens at just 100W. These lights shine in demanding environments like industrial facilities and luxurious commercial spaces, thanks to their uniform illumination and high efficacy, ranging from 120-200 lm/W. Compared to SMD LEDs, they are significantly more energy-efficient, reducing power consumption considerably and lowering long-term costs for users. COBs offer a consistent emission surface that eliminates hotspots and shadows, making them ideal for photography and medical applications. With thermally conductive materials such as AlN or copper substrates and integrated heat sinks or fans, these lights ensure durability and stable performance even under challenging conditions.

1. Key technical parameters

Power range: The power range of high-power COB light sources is wide, ranging from the common 30W to 500W, which can meet the lighting needs in different scenarios. Some industrial-grade products designed for special industrial applications can even exceed 1000W.

Color temperature range: The color temperature range is between 2700K (warm white) and 6500K (cold white), and users can customize special color temperatures according to specific needs. In indoor lighting design, different color temperatures can create different atmospheres and visual effects. For example, the warm white temperature of 2700K is often used to create a warm and comfortable home atmosphere; the natural white temperature of 4000K - 5000K is more suitable for office places and can improve people's work efficiency; and the cold white temperature of 6500K is often used in commercial displays or industrial lighting scenes that need to highlight clear contours and a sense of coolness.

Color rendering index (CRI): The color rendering index (CRI) of the standard high-power COB light source is greater than 80, and the color rendering index of the high-end model (such as full-spectrum COB) is greater than 95. This parameter is crucial for application scenarios that require accurate restoration of the color of objects.

Voltage/current: DC drive is usually used, and common voltage specifications include 36V, 72V, etc. In order to ensure the service life and stability of the light source, a constant current power supply needs to be matched. This is because the constant current power supply can provide a stable current for the LED chip to avoid chip damage or performance degradation caused by current fluctuations

2. Application scenarios

In the field of industrial lighting, high-power COB light sources play a vital role. Large spaces such as factories and warehouses usually require high-bay lighting, while traditional metal halide lamps have been gradually replaced by high-efficiency, energy-saving, and long-life high-power COB light sources due to high energy consumption and short life.

In outdoor lighting such as street lights, tunnel lights, and floodlights, high-power COB light sources are highly adaptable. They have excellent weather resistance and can operate stably in high and low temperatures and humid environments. The main road lights in cities are exposed to wind, sun, and rain, and the weather resistance of COB light sources ensures long-term stable lighting; when lighting tunnels in mountainous areas, stable performance ensures driving safety.

In special lighting, high-power COB light sources perform well. Stage lighting needs to create a variety of light and shadow effects, and COB light sources can achieve rich lighting effects by adjusting parameters. Plant growth lamps need to provide specific lighting, and full-spectrum COB plant growth lamps can simulate natural sunlight and create an ideal growth environment. Car headlights have high requirements for light sources. Specially designed and optimized COB headlights provide clear and bright vision and improve driving safety.

In the field of commercial lighting, such as shopping malls, exhibition halls and other places, high-power COB light sources are also indispensable. These places require high-brightness, high-color rendering light sources to display goods and services and attract customers' attention. High-power COB light sources provide uniform, bright and high-color reproduction light, making the colors of goods more vivid and realistic, and the details more clearly visible, thereby enhancing the display effect and attractiveness of goods.

3. Heat dissipation solution

Substrate material: Aluminum nitride ceramic (AlN) and copper substrate (IMS) are commonly used high thermal conductivity substrate materials in high-power COB light sources. Among them, aluminum nitride ceramic has ultra-high thermal conductivity and good insulation performance, which can efficiently conduct the heat generated by LED chips and prevent problems such as electrical leakage; while copper substrates can quickly transfer heat to the heat sink with their excellent thermal conductivity and good electrical conductivity. In industrial lighting and outdoor lighting fixtures with strict heat dissipation requirements, the application of these high thermal conductivity substrate materials can ensure that the light source maintains a low temperature during long-term operation, thereby extending the service life of the light source.

Packaging process: Silicone high temperature resistant packaging is a commonly used packaging process. This packaging material can withstand high temperature environments and avoid damage to LED chips during the packaging process. At the same time, silicone packaging also has good sealing performance, which can prevent external impurities such as water vapor and dust from entering the interior of the lamp, affecting the performance and life of the light source. In some outdoor waterproof lamps and lamps used in high temperature environments, the silicone high temperature resistant packaging process can effectively protect high-power COB light sources.

Heat dissipation structure: including fins, heat pipes and active heat dissipation (fans, heat pipes), each with its own characteristics. Fins increase the heat dissipation area and are suitable for low-power heating; heat pipes use capillary action and phase change heat transfer, which is suitable for high heat dissipation requirements; fans accelerate air flow to carry heat, and heat pipes transfer heat through working fluid phase change cycles. Large-scale industrial or outdoor lighting often combines multiple methods. For example, outdoor LED street lights may be equipped with these components at the same time to adapt to high temperature environments.

4. Advantages and Challenges

High integration: High-power COB light sources tightly integrate many LED chips on a substrate, greatly simplifying the design and assembly process of lamps. Compared with traditional SMD LED light sources, it does not require complex circuit layout and numerous connection lines, thereby reducing the number of parts and failure points, and improving the overall reliability and stability of the lamps. For example, in some small commercial lighting fixtures, the use of high-power COB light sources can make the lamp structure more compact and easy to install and maintain.

Long life (L50>50,000 hours): With excellent heat dissipation design and the selection of high-quality materials, high-power COB light sources have a long service life. Under normal use, its life can reach more than 50,000 hours, far exceeding traditional lighting sources. This allows users to reduce the frequency and cost of replacing lamps when purchasing and using high-power COB light source lamps, which also meets the needs of energy conservation and environmental protection in modern society.

Good light color consistency: During the production process, high-power COB light sources can ensure that the luminous characteristics of each chip are basically consistent through precise control and screening processes, thereby achieving overall light color uniformity and consistency. This is of great value in some places that require high-quality lighting, such as photography studios, art galleries, etc. For example, in a photography studio, uniform light color can ensure that the color of the photos taken is accurate and true, and avoid color deviation problems caused by inconsistent light color of the light source.

Complicated heat dissipation design: With the continuous increase in the power of LED chips, heat dissipation has become a key factor restricting the development of high-power COB light sources. Complex heat dissipation design leads to an increase in the cost and volume of lamps, and also puts higher requirements on the production process. For example, in some small electronic devices with limited space, it is difficult to achieve effective heat dissipation, and special heat dissipation structures and heat dissipation materials are required.

High cost: Compared with traditional lighting sources and some other types of LED light sources, the cost of high-power COB light sources is still relatively high. This is mainly due to the use of advanced technology, high-quality materials and complex production processes. In some cost-sensitive market areas, such as the ordinary household lighting market, high costs may limit its promotion and application. However, with the continuous advancement of technology and the expansion of production scale, its cost is expected to gradually decrease.
